Frequently Asked Questions
What is a notary public and how do they protect against fraud?
A notary public is an official who is authorized to witness and certify signatures on legal documents, take oaths and affirmations, and perform other tasks such as certifying copies of original documents. The main role of a notary public is to prevent fraud by verifying the identity of the person signing a document and ensuring that they are signing it willingly and without duress.
Can the notary assist with filling out my documents?
No. That is considered the unlicensed practice of law and is prohibited.
I need witnesses. Can the notary also act as a witness?
No, the State of Maine specifies that notaries may not act as a witness for a document they are notarizing.
How do I know my notary is not a fraud?
A list of commissioned notaries can be found on maine.gov.
